Established in 1932 by the Ex-ruler Nizam of Hyderabad, the Telangana State Aviation Academy (TSAA) has a rich legacy of excellence in aviation training.
Originally founded as the State Aero Club, the academy was dedicated to providing aviation education and promoting the sport of flying.
Over the decades, it has evolved into a premier institution, offering cutting-edge training programs in aircraft maintenance and aviation engineering. With a history rooted in the golden era of Hyderabad’s aviation, TSAA continues to uphold its mission of nurturing skilled professionals for the dynamic aviation industry.
Today, the academy offers a 1-Year Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Category-A1) course, designed to equip students with the technical expertise and practical skills required for a successful career in aviation. A Legacy Built on Wings of Excellence.
Captain S. N. Reddy stands as one of India’s most distinguished aviation professionals, with a career that spans decades of flying, training, and leadership. As a Check Pilot, Flying Instructor, and DGCA Examiner, he simultaneously commanded and trained on HS 748, Boeing 737, and Airbus A300 aircraft—an extraordinary feat rarely achieved in global aviation. Over the course of his career, he has trained more than 2,000 Indian and overseas pilots, earning the reputation that nearly every pilot in Indian Airlines had, at some point, been his trainee. With more than 25,000 hours of flying and instructional experience, his contribution to pilot training is unparalleled.
Beyond the cockpit, Captain Reddy held several senior management positions in Indian Airlines and Air India, including General Manager (Operations & Training), Director of Flight Safety, Director of Operations, and Regional Director. His technical expertise extended into advisory roles for government and industry: Aviation Advisor and Special Secretary to the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Railways, and Aviation Advisor to GMR International Airports Hyderabad Limited. He played a pivotal role in selecting the site and planning the Shamshabad International Airport, ensuring it was pilot-friendly with unobstructed approaches and a full runway for safe operations. He also advised on enabling the Airbus A380 to land at Begumpet Airport during an air show.
As Secretary and CEO of the Andhra Pradesh Aviation Academy, later transformed into the Telangana State Aviation Academy, Captain Reddy elevated the institution to national prominence. Under his leadership, the Academy won the “Best Aviation Academy” award for 12 consecutive years from the Aero Club of India and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, becoming the No. 1 academy in the country. His visionary thinking introduced academic education into aviation for the first time in India, launching B.Sc. and M.Sc. Aviation programs in collaboration with leading universities in Hyderabad.
Captain Reddy’s influence extended into policy and regulation. He was instrumental in raising the retirement age of pilots from 60 to 65 years, making Aircraft Maintenance Engineering courses eligible for admission into NALSAR University’s M.A. in Aviation Law, and reforming the selection of ground instructors by allowing CPL holders to qualify in place of ATPL holders. His articles laid the foundation for regional air connectivity in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, shaping the future of aviation accessibility in the region.
His contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Indira Gandhi Sadbhavana Award, presented by Lt. Gen. (Retd.) M. M. Lakhera, Governor of Mizoram, and the international honor of “Legend in Aviation” awarded in Dayton, Ohio, USA.
